The spotlight on the best films of the year has attracted an interest unlike anything we've seen in a long time, with major productions, actors and directors breathing new life into the seventh art, especially in an era where streaming is the key to grabbing attention.

The biggest night in the entertainment calendar is finally upon us - the 96th Oscars.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which has 13 nominations, is expected to sweep up at the ceremony later.

Many film fans will also be cheering on Barbie, last year's biggest hit at the box office, which has eight nods.

US television host Jimmy Kimmel will be presenting the awards from Los Angeles, with the show starting at 16:00 (PT), 19:00 (ET) and midnight (GMT).

Here are all the hot talking points and things to look out for at the ceremony (we've already placed a bet on Margot Robbie wearing pink).

Why are the Oscars such a big deal?

More formally known as the Academy Awards, the Oscars have been recognising big screen talent since 1929.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, based in Los Angeles, annually nominate and vote across more than 20 categories including best picture, best actor and best actress.

While film awards ceremonies including the Golden Globes and the Baftas attract plenty of attention, the Oscars is the pinnacle of achievement in the awards season calendar. The awards are voted for by Academy members.Oscar Nominees 2024: See the Full List

The 96th annual Academy Award nominations raised the definitive movie question of the season: Is this the year of “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer?” We still don’t quite know since they each got multiple nominations (“Barbie” with eight and “Oppenheimer” with 13). In any case, it will be another excuse for us to use the term “Barbenheimer.”

Kyle Buchanan, The New York Times’s awards-season columnist, previously had predicted that because of the amount of good movies and impressive talent we have been treated to this past year, it was hard to say what film, if any, was likely to sweep in the big categories of best picture, best director, best actor and best actress — and he was right. “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Holdovers” and “Poor Things” all got nominations in the best picture category and for the most part, received nominations in all the big categories.

Check out where you can watch the show live in India. One of the most awaited nights of the year is just round the corner. The Academy Awards is scheduled for March 10, 2024 (EST). Comedian Jimmy Kimmel is all set to host the show for the fourth time. While the red-carpet celebrations and the award gala itself will take place on Sunday night in the US, owing to the time difference, it will be early Monday morning in India by then. Here's everything about where you can catch the live telecast and streaming of the Oscars in India. The Oscars will be presented at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Indian viewers can watch the Oscars 2022 ceremony live on Disney+ Hotstar from 4:00 AM on Monday, March 11. On Tuesday, the official Instagram account of Disney plus Hotstar shared a reel of most of the Oscar-nominated films this year, and wrote in the caption: “Grab your snacks and settle in for a star-studded day! Oscars 2024, streaming live on #DisneyPlusHotstar, March 11. Let the show begin!”Last summer's big box office battle, which was fought between "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie", will carry over into Oscar night, with the films once again going head-to-head.

However, whilst nobody knew which of the two films would do better at the box office, it seems almost everyone knows who the big winner will be, barring any major surprises.

Christopher Nolan's film accumulated 13 nominations, while Greta Gerwig's film has 8, but behind those two productions could emerge the surprises of the night, and everything points to "Poor Things", with 11 nominations, and Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" with 10, could be the main rivals of the ceremony.
