We are so grateful to share that YMECI received the Haitian Community Service and Solidarity Award from LORI, the Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants, at its 2026 Annual Banquet, One Louisiana, One Table.

The award was presented on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Catholic Life Center in Baton Rouge, during an evening that brought together families, volunteers, partners, and community leaders from the many cultures that call Louisiana home.

In sharing the news, LORI said this recognition reflects the gratitude of its board, its staff, and most importantly, the refugee and immigrant families whose lives have been touched by YMECI’s work.

This honor belongs to everyone who has given their time, their gifts, and their hearts to serve alongside us: our volunteers, our partners, our supporters, and the families who trust us.

Thank you, LORI, for this recognition, and thank you to our community for showing up for one another. We give all glory to God, and we’re more inspired than ever to keep growing and serving families across Louisiana.

Navigating complex systems, rights, and resources can often leave families feeling frustrated, uncertain, and unheard. As part of our YMECI Grand Opening events at 535 Holmes Blvd in Terrytown, we brought community members together for an essential session focused on advocacy, rights, and practical preparation.

The session featured guest speaker Guerline Jozef, Co-Founder of Haitian Bridge Alliance, alongside attorney Colette Pichon Battle from Taproot Earth. Focusing on the critical topic of immigrant rights, they provided clear, straightforward guidance to help demystify legal protections and address the real-world concerns facing many in our community. For many attendees who have felt hopeless or overwhelmed when seeking trustworthy information, the discussion offered much-needed clarity, renewed hope, and actionable insight.

Alongside the legal rights session, we also hosted a Free School Supplies Giveaway to relieve some of the immediate burdens on local families preparing their children for school. By pairing advocacy and education with practical assistance, our goal remains simple: to stand alongside our neighbors, restore confidence, and ensure no one has to navigate these challenges alone. We are grateful to our speakers and everyone who took part in making this session a meaningful step forward for our community.

Here are photo recaps from the event.

Immigrants have long been the backbone of many societies, bringing diverse perspectives, skills, and resilience. Their stories often reflect a journey filled with challenges, hope, and triumph. In this blog post, we will explore transformative stories of immigrants who have not only overcome obstacles but have also contributed significantly to their new communities. These narratives highlight the strength of the human spirit and the potential for growth and success in the face of adversity.

The Power of Resilience

Resilience is a common theme in the stories of immigrants. Many arrive in a new country with little more than their dreams and determination

Building Community Connections

Immigrants often play a crucial role in building community connections. They bring unique cultural perspectives that enrich the social fabric of their new homes.

Economic Contributions

The economic impact of immigrants is profound. They often fill labor shortages, start businesses, and contribute to innovation.

Education and Empowerment

Education is a powerful tool for immigrants seeking to build brighter futures. Many immigrants prioritize education for their children, understanding its importance in achieving success.

Overcoming Challenges Together

While the stories of immigrants are often filled with triumph, they also highlight the challenges faced along the way. Many immigrants encounter discrimination, language barriers, and difficulties in accessing resources. However, these challenges can also lead to solidarity and support within immigrant communities.

For instance, a group of immigrants from different backgrounds may come together to form a support network, sharing resources and experiences. This collective strength not only helps individuals navigate their challenges but also fosters a sense of community and belonging.

The Role of Advocacy

Advocacy plays a crucial role in supporting immigrants and ensuring their voices are heard. Organizations dedicated to immigrant rights work tirelessly to provide resources, legal assistance, and education. For example, a local nonprofit may offer workshops on navigating the immigration process, helping individuals understand their rights and options.

Through advocacy, immigrants can gain access to essential services and support systems. This empowerment enables them to build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Inspiring Future Generations

The stories of immigrants serve as powerful inspiration for future generations. By sharing their experiences, they instill a sense of hope and determination in young people. For instance, community leaders may organize mentorship programs where successful immigrants guide youth in their educational and career pursuits.

These mentorship relationships can have a lasting impact, encouraging young immigrants to pursue their dreams and break down barriers. The cycle of inspiration continues as these youth grow into leaders in their own right, contributing to their communities in meaningful ways.
